This online resource provides trusted, evidence-based clinical information for family physicians and community-based specialists to assist with clinical decision-making. Access it wherever and whenever you need it. This subscription-based tool provides access to more than 10,000 peer-reviewed topics across 20 medical specialties. Funded by the Family Practice Service Committee, a partnership of Doctors of BC and the BC government, UpToDate is available to Division of Family Practice members at no cost to individual physicians.

Used by over 2 million clinicians in 190 countries, UpToDate offers Family Practice Physicians useful information related to compensation, billing, business pathways related to starting, operating or closing a practice, technology, quality improvement and numerous practice supports.
The benefits of registering for UpToDate are many, including access via website or mobile app and CME credits for UpToDate searches.

Family Practice Services Committee

A collaborative committee that represent a partnership of the Government of BC and Doctors of BC

Since its inception in 2002, The Family Practice Services Committee (FPSC) has changed the way Family Doctors work and care for their patients. It is a committee of representatives from Doctors of BC, the Government of BC and the province’s health authorities, working with Family Doctors to address challenges within the profession. It is one of four joint collaborative committees that represent a partnership of the Government of BC and Doctors of BC. Through its programs and initiatives, FPSC has improved the way Family Doctors deliver care to their patients.

Through a Collective Voice and both Clinical and Practice Supports, as well as incentives, the FPSC is creating system change through Patient Medical Homes, Primary Care Networks and Team Based Care, evaluation of projects and innovations as well as integrating the Nurse in Practice program. FPSC offers physicians numerous practice supports programs as well as a suite of health technology supports and resources to guide family physicians and practice teams through the technology landscape.

Physician Health Program (PHP)

Supports and assists physicians and physician trainees in overcoming challenging issues that can impact their health and well-being

To support the ongoing health of our physician community, the Physician Health Program of BC (PHP) offers confidential advocacy, support and referral assistance for individual physician and physician in training.

PHP supports and assists physicians and physician trainees in overcoming challenging issues that can impact their health and well-being. Issues can include physical health, mental health and addictions, relationship issues, workplace issues and burnout. This Doctors of BC Program offers a variety of clinical services, short term counselling, referrals to specialized coaches and therapists as well as peer support, back to work transition planning, occupational health recommendations and ways to strengthen workplace relationships.

Doctors of BC’s Physician Health Program also offers a variety of preventative and educational services that address professional and personal issues, such as burnout, stress management, conflict resolution and improving collegiality.

Practice Support Program (PSP)

FPSC’s Practice Support Program (PSP) offers services for Family Doctors to optimize your practice, enhance your use of health technology, and more effectively manage your patient panel.

Our team helps your practice become more efficient, creating more time for proactive patient care and for adopting the patient medical home attributes. Our services are customized to meet your specific practice needs and to accommodate your busy schedule.

PharmaNet

Province-wide network of prescription records

PharmaNet is a provincewide network owned and operated by the Ministry of Health. PharmaNet keeps a record of every prescription dispensed in B.C. community pharmacies and select hospital outpatient pharmacies. More than 75 million transactions are processed annually in PharmaNet, which is used by people working in a variety of healthcare settings in B.C. This includes community pharmacies, private community health practices, and health authority facilities such as hospitals and outpatient clinics.

Every B.C. health professional who needs access to PharmaNet to deliver patient care must enroll in the Ministry of Health online application for health professionals called PRIME. PRIME protects patient and health professional information by assigning a unique global PharmaNet ID number to the user and every action they take in the program.

All B.C. private community health practices , community pharmacies and health authority care facilities and settings are required to register their PharmaNet sites in PRIME.

PharmaNet complies with the B.C. Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Pharmaceuticals Services Act.  It is subject to strict privacy and security measures designed to prevent unauthorized access and protect the information of B.C. residents.

HealthMatch BC

Matching health professionals with career opportunities throughout the province.

HealthMatch BC is a free health professional recruitment service designed to move healthcare in BC forward by matching health professionals with career opportunities throughout the province. HealthMatch BC continues to offer recruitment information and supports for health professionals transitioning to British Columbia. In addition to offering a listing of public employer job opportunities, health recruitment specialists help health professionals work through the licensing process, understand BC’s new nursing agreement and BC’s new payment model for Family Doctors.

HealthMatch BC recruitment specialists also provide customized advice on specific professions, credentials, licensing and immigration requirements as well as lifestyle interests, so candidates can move their career forward in British Columbia. They also offer access to The Health Career Access Program (HCAP) which provides a path for applicants with little or no experience in the healthcare sector. HealthMatch BC offers help in over 220 languages and through other accessible options. Registration is online and easy.

Doctors of BC

Doctors of BC provides advocacy, services, and professional benefits to help Family Doctors focus on what they do best: deliver high quality patient-centred care.

Doctors of BC works with Family Doctors in British Columbia so that together, they can make a difference for patients. Through governance and committees, guided by values of excellence, courage and inclusion, they support members in transforming the health care system and improving patient care. With a focus on collaboration with significant government, health care and community partners, Doctors of BC represent their Family Doctor members on a variety of issues. They also promote health care environments where Family Doctors and patients feel physically, psychologically, and culturally safe while accessing the supports they need.

Pathways is an online resource that provides Family Doctors and their office staff quick access to current and accurate referral information, including wait times and areas of expertise for specialists and specialty clinics. Pathways also provides access to hundreds of patient and Family Doctor resources, a searchable community service directory and a medical care directory.

College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) protects the public by ensuring physicians and surgeons meet expected standards of practice and conduct.

They fulfill this mission by:

  • ensuring that BC’s physicians and surgeons are qualified, competent, and fit to practise medicine
  • managing and responding to complaints from patients
  • taking action if a physician or surgeon is practising in a way that is incompetent, unethical or illegal
  • administering quality assurance activities to ensure physicians and surgeons remain competent throughout their professional lives
  • accrediting diagnostic and private medical/surgical facilities so that patients receive quality care

College of Family Doctors of Canada

The College of Family Doctors of Canada (CFPC) is the professional organization that represents more than 45,000 members across the country.

The College establishes the standards for and accredits postgraduate family medicine training in Canada’s 17 medical schools. It reviews and certifies continuing professional development programs and materials that enable family physicians to meet certification and licensing requirements. The CFPC provides high-quality services, supports family medicine teaching and research, and advocates on behalf of the specialty of family medicine, family physicians, and the patients they serve.
